During a regular season game, Team Red designates the **4th batting slot** as an **A/B slot**, with **Player A (Smith)** and **Player B (Jones)** sharing the position.
* In the **first time through the lineup**, Smith bats in the 4th position.
* In the **second time through the lineup**, Jones bats in the 4th position.
* This alternating pattern continues for the remainder of the game.
In the 5th inning, Jones is legally substituted for a pinch runner after reaching base. Smith remains eligible and continues to bat in the A/B slot during his next scheduled turn.
In the 6th inning, Jones is injured and no reserve players are available. Smith then bats for the 4th position for the rest of the game without penalty.
**Note:** This A/B batting arrangement would *not* be permitted in postseason play.
